Abstract Watercolor – Cool Memory

Abstract Watercolor - Cool Memory

This watercolor abstract was done on a small sheet of cold press watercolor paper.  Red and blue was used in contrast with other colors to excite the visual aspect of the viewer.  I named this watercolor abstract Cool Memory.  Layers of watercolor pigment was applied with a large brush using wet in wet technique.  Tissue was used to bolt out some color in the background to give it an interesting texture.  Layers of color also added when previous layer has dried.  A rigger paint brush was used for different lines and at the end, salt effet was used on the still wet areas.

Watercolor Paintng Daily – “Pear to Pear” Still Life

Watercolor Painting - Pear to pear 7x10 inches

This is the final finished painting or study of pointellism using cotton swab.   It teaches me the mixing of color visually when all the colors are placed side by side to each other.  Watercolor straight from the tube is used and is only diluted by water.  I found that using previouse hardened color on the palette is better for this techinque.  It gives me a better control of how much color to apply.  The hardened watercolor color is first got several spray mist of clean water from a small water spray bottle in order to soften it a bit.  Most of the color I use in this study is from Windsor and Newton Artist watercolour.   There is a wealth of information about watercolour pigments on their site.

Watercolor on cold press paper – “Pear to pear” 7 x 10 inches

Peter Lau - Pear to pear - Watercclor on cold press watercolor paper 7 x 10 inches

Last night I tried my first watercolor pointellism.  It is done on a 7 x 10 inches cold press watercolor paper.  The color was painted on one dot at a time using the cotton swab.  I think the dried watercolor paint is best for this technique but I shall experiment further.  The dry watercolor paint in my palette is first sprayed with mist of water from a amall water bottle that creates fine mist.  Then a cotton swab is wet with clean watercor and paint is transfer onto the swab by touching the paint.  Pure pigment is being transferred to the paper one dot at a time keeping in mind the intensity and value of each dot of watercolor paint.  I think with this techinque of not mixing paints, a variety of watercolor paint is needed in different shades and color should be on hand for the application.

3 Pears Watercolor final revision

3 Pears Watercolor

I have made a final revision on the 3 pears watercolor painting I did a while ago.  The before and after picture is shown above.  I have put on layers and layers of watercolor paint onto the painting while masking out the background or the pear.  As done in the many other watercolor painting before, I have been using the watercolor spattering technique for this painting as well.  This creates a effect I cannot get from watercolor painting using a brush and it is quite interesting with tiny little dots of paint similar to air brush.  I found that I need to be not afraid of failure in making adjustment to my finished paintings.  I need to treat it as a learning exercise in watercolor painting and even though if might turn out worse than before and yet I need to do it with faith and try to learn something in the process.

I have also uploaded two pictures of me in the Artist Statement page of this web site.  One is taken in my studio in front of my table.   It  is my quite place for doing my watercolor.  Another photo is taken with me standing beside my pebble painting.

Toward the Sunrise – Daily Watercolor Painting

Completed Watercolor Painting - Toward the Sunrise

Toward the Sunrise – Watercolor 15 x 20 inches

The watercolor painting Toward the Sunrise has been changed in the final stage and I think it is better as a result.  The bottom green has been darken together with the value of the tree on the right side.  Layers of Winsor and Newton Windsor Green and Ultramarine Blue was added.  That resulted in a darker value for the foreground in the landscape which I think is more appropiate for the scene.  The sky seems brighter and the purple and brown in other areas has more brilliance in contrast with the dark foreground.

Daily watercolor painting – Toward the Sunrise

Toward the Sunrise - Watercolor 15 x 20 inches

I have completed painting the Toward the Sunrise watercolor painting last night.  It was not as time consuming as I thought it would.  It was painted using Winsor and Newton watercolor and also Da Vinci Watercolor paints on cold press watercolor paper.  Watercolor from the tube was spatter on one layer at a time and it works for this kind of watercolor painting.  I feel that the bottom green shade of the painting should be a darker shade and should carry a darker value.  I think that needs to be changed.  The little lonley tree on the right side need to be darker as well.  I will try to correct this tonight and that should give the overall watercolor painting more contrast so that the upper part of the painting should resulted in a much more sunrise glow.  This I will try to achieve tonight.

Toward the Sunrise - Watercolor Landscape

More work done on the Toward the Sunrise watercolor painting.  I tried doing a gradated wash on the paper so that it acts like an underpainting before I spatter on the diluted but not mixed watercolor from the tube.  I found that it works better in certain areas and I need to be more aware  on the tones and values of the adjacent areas if I use this underpainting method.  The color nees to be the same or very similar and it will afffect the overall value of the areas to be painted.  Exploring all these possibilities will certainly give me more options as my style is developed and fine tuned.  Tonight I will try to finish this watercolor painting and will go on and explore some other different application of watercolor paint on paper.

Watercolor Painting Daily – Landscape Painting

Landscape Watercolor Painting

Continue with this landscape watercolor painting last night doing the rocks and trees.  It is lots of fun doing this kind of watercolor painting makes me slow down and learn several different aspects in watercolor.  One thing I learn from this exercise is to take my time in my painting.  Doing a painting quick sometimes has opposite efficts and because watercolor painting is to leave blank the areas you want to have less watercolor paint, planning is very important.  Good planning in sketching and the value before I apply the color is as important as applying the color on the watercolor paper.  Patients is also necessary to let the watercolor paint to dry between layers.  I also learn the amount of water in my brush is very important as well.  It affects the intensity of the watercolor as well as the saturation of the watercolor paint.  Also keep a clean wash bucket of water is just as important and I learn not to be lazy and change water often.
